Rockers Avenged Sevenfold are heading towards the top of the charts on Friday after the release of their new album Hail To The King.
It’s the sixth album from the American rockers and their first full record without James ‘The Rev’ Sullivan who tragically died from an overdose in 2009. And for frontman M Shadows the new chapter is both exciting and tinged with sadness.
He said: “I am definitely excited for people to finally hear it so that it can speak for itself in some ways. “It’s been really difficult on an emotional level, on a songwriting level we had a good time doing it but it was also difficult because we were always wondering what he would have brought to the table.
“You can’t help but wonder, you know? What would be different on the album and what songs he would have brought and that’s always sad.
“We’re just trying to look forward, move forward and continue to play his songs live and continue to preserve his legacy in whatever we choose to do in the future.
“Releasing the new album is exciting but also very sad to be without him but unfortunately that’s a part of life.”
According to M Shadows the new record is as pure as you can get - simply because Avenged Sevenfold choose not to listen to the hype.
He said: “We just do what we have to do - on this album we took a year off before we started writing it and it wasn’t even necessarily because we didn’t have anything to write, we just didn’t want to rewrite Nightmare or rehash a bunch of old stuff just to get an album out there.
“We wanted it to be special and I think one cool thing about this band is that Johnny and Synyster Gates don’t own computers so they don’t even see the stuff going on around them. Which is kind of cool because then they just write music and put it out and it is truly from the heart - it’s not got anything to do with all the madness going around and every single person’s opinion on what Avenged Sevenfold is doing.
“So it’s pretty pure and cool in that way as it’s out of the norm which I like as then you can just make music that’s pure and not even worry about it.”
So the new album is very much in the spirit of Avenged Sevenfold but with some subtle changes. M Shadows said: “Purely on a musical level we wanted to make something that was stripped down and bad-ass with a lot of bluesier riffs. We wanted to keep it very rock and roll but big sonically.
“We also wanted to make an album that is consistent with what we have done before so we can play it live and nothing feels out of place. We want to continue making good albums.”
M Shadows is confident about how the record will be received by fans as the single Hail To The King has gone down so well.
He said: “It’s the same way we felt when we started playing Nightmare - the other night we headlined Montreal and there were 36,000 people there and everyone had their fist in the air singing all the words of Hail To The King and it was only out for two weeks so we are excited about it.”
For M Shadows, Requiem is the track that sums up the mood of the whole record.
He said: “It’s 18th century classical mixed with very heavy Zeplinesque grooves and it’s one of those songs where I don’t think I have ever heard a rock band do something like it or anyone else so that makes me very proud.

Vogliamo continuare a far buoni album.
Shadows è positivo riguardo all'accoglienza dei fans vedendo com'è stata ben presa Hail to the King.
