Recentemente il nostro Johnny ha rilasciato un interessante intervista telefonica ad "All Things Loud".
L'argomento principale di tutta la conversazione è il tour di The Stage specialmente in termini di produzione, palco e grandi idee.
Si torna a parlare infatti dell'enorme produzione del The Stage World Tour, di come sia nata la collaborazione col Cirque du Soleil, di quante attrezzature abbiano dovuto usare per raggiungere gli effetti scenici che hanno caratterizzato quest'ultimo tour ed ovviamente anche quali sono stati per lui i momenti più memorabili dei mesi in viaggio. Si parla anche del lavoro che la band sta facendo per adattare la scenografia (adatta a show indoor, al chiuso) ai palchi all'aperto dei festival estivi che li attendono il prossimo anno.
Essere una delle band più grandi del mondo non deve esser facile, e per una band come i Sevenfold non sarebbe potuto accadere in un momento migliore della loro lunga e tortuosa carriera.
Ancorati alla scena metal americana locale dal 1999 ad oggi M.Shadows e compagni hanno dovuto gestire una selezione di critiche popolari e di dischi che puntavano già al futuro, ognuno con più successo di quello precedente.
Il grande cambiamento è stato nel 2005 quando City Of Evil ha acceso la fiamma per una band con così grandi ambizioni che si sono solo superate nel corso degli anni, specialmente nel 2010 con Nightmare che li ha elevati definitivamente ad un livello che nessuno si aspettava.
E' stato solo nel 2013, quando Hail to the King è stato rilasciato, che il mondo si è seduto per osservare meglio questo quintetto di HB e dove stava arrivando.
Benchè fossero una band già consolidata all'epoca, questo disco è servito loro ad arrivare in cima alle bill dei più grandi festival ed a riempire arene sempre più grandi in tutto il mondo. E' anche servito a farli arrivare ad un punto della loro carriera dove ogni livello successivo può solo essere un passo da giganti o un affondo colossale. Fortunatamente, per come si sono evolute le cose, l'uscita di The Stage l'anno scorso è risultato essere un miscuglio meticoloso di rischio, sia musicalmente parlando che in termini promozionali. Con la band in piena campagna promozionale, abbiamo trovato il tempo di fare due chiacchere con il loro bassista Johnny Christ per discutere del loro successo, dei loro piani per il 2018 e di come possano solo spingersi sempre più avanti a questo punto.
- Hey Johnny. Come va?
J) Hey amico, va tutto alla grande. E tu?
- Grande, io sto bene grazie. È passato poco più di un anno da quando avete rilasciato The Stage. Come è stata la reazione generale dal tuo punto di vista, comparandolo in particolare con gli album precedenti degli A7X?
J) Fino ad ora è andato tutto secondo il corso, sta andando alla grande! Abbiamo fatto un sacco di cose differenti e pazze e ci son state diverse cose da digerire per i nostri fan, ma ogni disco che abbiamo pubblicato ha avuto la stessa reazione. Questo perché noi facciamo sempre cose differenti.
- E' stato (The Stage) preceduto da una campagna di marketing poco ortodossa. Ora che è passato del tempo, pensi che sia stato il modo più migliore di pubblicarlo?
J) Allora, sono assolutamente felice di quello che abbiamo fatto e di come abbiamo pensato fuori dagli schemi, ma penso che sia stato difficile perchè non sai mai come i fan prenderanno queste tue idee. Se tu fai le cose in modo particolare per così tanto tempo diventa difficile uscire da quella zona di comfort. L’industria musicale cambia così drasticamente di mese in mese edd io sono molto entusiasta di aver aperto una porta alle cose che potremmo anche rifare in futuro. Ci sono così tanti modi differenti di fare qualcosa, ma io sono super orgoglioso del modo in cui lo abbiamo fatto. Creativamente parlando mi sento eccitato per il futuro.
- Se dovessi affrontare di nuovo una campagna promozionale del genere, ti approcceresti ad essa differentemente?
J) Hmm, non ne sono sicuro. Mantenere il tutto un segreto è andata piuttosto bene, ma ad un certo punto avremmo dovuto avere già dei tour programmati da fare e non sai mai come vanno queste cose. In tempi diversi ed in mercati differenti non potevamo permetterci di fare qualcosa di completamente nuovo e quindi ti tocca sempre rivalutare le cose. Abbiamo un sacco di show programmati per il 2018 e le vendite dei biglietti sembrano andar bene.
- Il palco progettato per The Stage era estremamente ambizioso. Pensi che siete riusciti davvero a realizzarlo come lo volevate?
J) Guardando indietro, sono molto felice di come sia andata considerando che ci sono sempre molte cose che vorresti fare. Avrei voluto più dettagli e pezzi qua e la, ma ero eccitato di cosa ne era uscito fuori.
Abbiamo deciso di lasciar perdere i giochi pirotecnico che abbiamo utilizzato molto nei tour precedenti, penso che li riprenderemo più in la. Volevamo fare qualcosa che dipingesse l’immagine di The Stage in un set dal vivo, che è quello che abbiamo sempre cercato di fare ogni volta, dare un'immagine.
- Come è nata la collaborazione iniziale col Cirque du Soleil?
j)Penso che sia stato tramite il nostro team di produzione. Si sono messi in contatto con loro ed il loro team è riuscito a fornirci alcuni ottimi contenuti e materiali per i muri di schermi, è stato molto eccitante.
-C on una produzione così grande, spesso le cose possono mettersi male. Hai avuto alcuni momenti da brividi alla schiena?
J) Haha si. Abbiamo avuto un paio di momenti simili durante il tour europeo che abbiamo fatto all’inizio dell’anno. Abbiamo un enorme astronauta che teniamo sospeso sopra il palco e ci sono state un paio di occasioni in cui ci è sceso un po' troppo vicino. Ci siamo fatti due risate su questo, non è stato nulla di grave ma ci sarà tutto quanto di lezione. Nessun show potrà mai essere perfetto al 100%, ma cerchiamo sempre di fare il nostro meglio e di divertirci.
- E ci sono stati momenti particolarmente memorabili durante tutto il tour, quest’anno?
J) Immagino che la parte più memorabile sia stata qui a Sacramento, California. Abbiamo suonato per il compleanno di M Shadows e quindi avevamo delle cheerleader pronte a salire sul palco per portargli la torta. È stato piuttosto memorabile.
- Come vedi gli show evolversi, in termini di produzione? Specialmente riguardo gli show dei più grandi festival in cui vi esibirete in Europa il prossimo anno
J) Sarà molto difficile per noi, perché saranno tutti show all’aperto e su un palco differente ogni sera. La nostra produzione è perlopiù realizzata per spettacoli al chiuso. Al momento stiamo lavorando sulla transizione della nostra produzione per adattarla ai palchi dei festival, ci stiamo lavorando proprio mentre sto parlando con te.
Siamo super eccitati per i festival europei, perché quello che vorremmo portare è molto eccitante; è un buon miscuglio tra il nostro passato ed i nostri show recenti, sarà molto figo. E' stato un anno estremamente impegnativo per noi e stiamo ancora valutando offerte da alcuni festival europei, ci stiamo ancora lavorando. Vorremmo riuscire ad incastrarci anche qualche data da headliner se riusciamo, dopodichè torneremo negli States e probabilmente faremo un altro tour estivo.
- Vi vedremo su qualche palco olandese la prossima estate?
Non lo so, a dire il vero. Non c'è nulla di confermato per l’Olanda, per questo non so dirti altro! Ahah
- Voglio concentrarmi sul tuo equipaggiamento per un secondo. Hai apportato delle modifiche importanti alla tua attrezzatura durante le registrazioni di The Stage?
J) In verità nnon abbiamo apportato alcuna modifica in termini di equipaggiamento rispetto a quello utilizzato per Hail to the King; ad essere onesto. Si tratta principalmente di roba di pedali, compresi alcuni suoni da pedale fighi che hanno potenziato alcuni dei nostri chorus. La mia attrezzatura è la 2001B Gaillen-Kreuger, che uso da parecchio tempo. Dal punto di vista dei modelli, non ho fatto alcuna modifica.

J) Grazie, spero di vedervi tutti ad uno show il prossimo anno.

ON THE PHONE WITH AVENGED SEVENFOLD’S JOHNNY CHRIST: “WHAT WE’VE GOT COMING IS REALLY EXCITING”
Being one of the biggest bands in the world is never easy, and for a band like Avenged Sevenfold it couldn’t have come at a better point in their long-winding career. Having hammered away at the local US metal scene since as early as 1999, M Shadows and co. have continuously managed to put out a selection of critically acclaimed and sonically forward-thinking records, each one more successful than its predecessor. Their breakthrough came in 2005, when City of Evil lit the fire for a band whose ambitions grew as the years went by, with 2010’s Nightmare eventually elevating them to a level nobody could have ever predicted in their wildest. It was only when 2013’s Hail to the King came out, though, that the world really sat up and noticed what the Huntington Beach quintet were up to. Although well-established by then, it served as the record which put them at the top of festival bills and within the confines of the world’s biggest venues. It also made for a point in their career where any next step could have been a huge hit or a massive miss. Thankfully for all those involved, last year’s The Stage turned out to be a meticulously crafted risk, both musically and promotionally. With the band now well into its promotional campaign, we found the time to call up bassist Johnny Christ (pictured above) to discuss its succes so far, their plans for 2018 and how they can only move forward from here on out.
Hey Johnny. How are you doing?
Hey man, I’m doing great. What about you?
Nice one, I’m good thanks. It’s been just over a year since you put out The Stage. How’s the general reaction been from your point of view, particularly in comparison to previous A7X records?
So far it’s been par for the course, it’s been doing great! We did a lot of different, crazy things with it and there was a lot to digest for our fans, but every record that we’ve put out has had the same reaction. That’s because we always do something different.
It was preceded by an unorthodox marketing campaign. Now that time has passed, do you think this ended up being the most effective way of going about it?
I mean, I’m absolutely glad that we did it and that we thought outside of the box, but I think that it’s difficult when you don’t know if the fans going to ‘get’ those ideas. If you do something a particular way for so long it becomes hard to get out of that comfort zone. The music industry changes so drastically months at a time, and I’m really excited about having opened a door to the things we could do in the future. There are so many different ways of doing something, but I’m super proud of the way in which we did this. It’s creatively excited me, looking forward.
If you were to do such a campaign again, would you approach it differently?
Hmm, I’m not sure. You know, I think the execution of keeping it a secret was done extremely well. At some point, we should’ve had some tours ready to go, but you never know exactly how it will go off. Different times and different markets could’ve allowed for something totally different, and then you have to re-evaluate it. We’ve got a lot of shows lined in up in 2018, and the ticket sales are looking great.
The Stage’s arena show was an extremely ambitious one. Do you think you managed to pull it off as you’d wanted?
Looking back, I’m really happy with how that went considering that there are always so many things you want to do. I would’ve some more bits and pieces here and there, but I was so excited about what we were able to put together. We decided to move away from the pyrotechnic stuff which we did more of on previous tours, but I think that we’ll bring that back again one day. We wanted to do something that painted the picture of The Stage in a live setting, which is something we’ve tried doing every time – painting a visual image.
How did the initial collaboration with Cirque du Soleil’s team come about?
I think that was via our own production team. They got in touch with them and then got together, and their team managed to provide is with some great content and video wall stuff; it was very exciting.
With such big productions, things are bound to go wrong. Did you have any Spinal Tap moments?
Haha, yeah. We had a couple of moments on the European tour which we did at the beginning of the year. There’s this spaceman we have which gets lifted up behind the stage, and there a couple of occasions where he went a little limp on us. We got a couple of laughs out of that. There wasn’t anything huge, though, but I guess you just look back and learn from it. No show will ever be 100%, but we always try our best and have fun with it.
And were there any particularly memorable moments from throughout the tour this year?
I guess the most memorable part was here in Sacramento, California. We played a show on M Shadows’ actual birthday and we got some cheerleaders to come out onstage and give him a cake. That was pretty memorable.
How do you see the live show moving forward from a production sense? Particular in regards to the larger festival shows you’ll be playing in Europe next year.
That’s gonna be very difficult for us, because those shows will all be outdoors and on a different stage each night. Our production is largely made for indoor shows. We’re currently making the transition into suiting this production to festival stages, and we’re actually working on it as we speak. We’re excited for the European festivals, because what we’ve got coming is really exciting; it’s a really good blend of our past and current live shows, which is gonna be really cool. We’ve got an extremely busy year, and we’re still getting some offers from European festivals and settling those. We might try and sneak in a couple of headline shows if we can, and after that we’ll go back to the States and probably do another summer tour.
Will we be seeing you on a Dutch stage next summer?
I don’t know actually. Nothing has been confirmed for the Netherlands, so I really can’t tell you anything! Haha.
I just want to focus on your gear for a second. Did you make any major changes to your rig when working on The Stage?
We didn’t really make many changes in terms of the gear we used from Hail to the King to The Stage, to be honest. It was mainly pedal stuff, including some cool rounded out pedal sounds which boosted some of our bouncier choruses. My go-to rig is the 2001B Gaillen-Kreuger, which I’ve been using for a pretty long time. Gear-wise I didn’t make any changes.
