Prima dell'arrivo della band in Europa per il tour estivo, il nostro Zacky è stato raggiunto dal quotidiano irlandese Irish News per
una breve intervista.
La band parla del proprio debutto a Belfast e delle origini irlandesi
I rockers Avenged Sevenfold torneranno in Irlanda la prossima settimana per il loro primissimo show in carriera a Belfast.
David Roy ha fatto qualche domanda a Zacky Vengeance sulle origini irlandesi della band, il concept album del 2016 The Stage e sui loro piani per l'imminente ventennale di carriera.
Ciao Zacky, non vedete l'ora di tornare in Europa la prossima settimana? Gli A7X hanno in programma un sacco di festival in cui faranno da headliner, incluso il Download. Siete pronti?
ZV: Non vedo l'ora di rivedere i nostri fan europei. Dire una bugia se dicessi che non vedo l'ora di visitare nuovi posti nei giorni off e scoprire nuove culture del vecchio continente.
Siete dei frequentatori abituali dell'Irlanda da diversi anni ma questa sarà la prima visita a Belfast. Ascoltando Hail to the King dovreste essere parecchio eccitati nel suonare alla SSE Arena che è davvero dietro l'angolo rispetto al set delle riprese di Game Of Thrones, lo seguivate?
ZV: Sono un grande fan! Non ci avevo minimamente pensato a questo, ora non potrò fare a meno di aggiungerlo alla lista di cose che voglio assolutamente vedere li. L'Irlanda è davvero un posto bellissimo.
Qualcuno della band ha origini irlandesi?
ZV: Si, il nostro primo batterista ed amico Jimmy Sullivan aveva origini irlandesi. Era molto fiero di questa cosa e si era anche tatuato un enorme O sulla schiena per commemorare il cognome della sua famiglia O'Sullivan.
Anche Matt, il nostro cantante, è parzialmente irlandese ed è sempre stato molto fiero di questo. Io e Gates siamo irlandesi nel cuore e Brooks, il nostro attuale batterista, credo sia al 100% messicano oaxaca.
A luglio tornerete negli States per l'End of the World tour dove vi farà da supporto il super gruppo rap/rock Prophets of Rage. Avete mai suonato con loro in precedenza e siete fan dei Rage Against the Machine, dei Public Enemy e dei Cypress Hill?
ZV: Non abbiamo mai suonato con loro prima, ma siamo tutti grandissimi fan dei RATM. Sono cresciuto proprio quando uscivano i migliori dischi di Cypress Hill e Public Enemy quindi per me è davvero un onore dividere il palco con questi pionieri musicali.
Sono passati due anni da quando avete rilasciato il vostro concept album The Stage. Si tratta probabilmente il vostro disco più ambizioso ma avete deciso di rilasciarlo senza alcuna promozione. Perchè avete deciso di lanciarlo "fuori dal radar" e come vi fa sentire quella scelta a distanza di due anni? Sembra davvero essere una pietra miliare per la vostra band in termini musicali.
ZV: Volevamo fare qualcosa che scuotesse il mondo del rock. Far parlare le persone senza annoiare i nostri fan con la promozione tradizionale. E' stato un rischio enorme lanciare il disco così e abbiamo incontrato scetticismo e critiche, ma dopo due anni posso dirti che abbiamo suonato alcune delle date più grandi della nostra carriera e dimostrato che mettere i propri fan al primo posto è sempre la scelta migliore.
L'ex batterista dei Bad Religion, Brooks Wackerman, si è unito alla vostra band poco prima che vi metteste al lavoro per questo disco e sembra che così facendo tutti i pianeti si siano ri allineati per voi. La sua entrata ha rinvigorito la band in termini di performance nel suonare e nella composizione?
ZV: Assolutamente si, Brooks è fantastico sia sul palco che fuori. E' arrivato da una band leggendaria del punk rock con l'abilità di passare da un genere all'altro. E' qualcosa che abbiamo sempre ritrovato anche nella nostra band e quindi essere in grado di incorporare i suoi stili è stato davvero importante per noi.
La band ha fatto una grandissima performance acustica al Grammy Museum nel 2017. Vi è piaciuto farlo e pensi che ci sarà in futuro la possibilità di fare un tour di questo tipo tutto "unplugged" ad un certo punto della vostra carriera? La cover degli Stones, As Teras Go By, in particolare è stata molto bella.
ZV: Grazie davvero! E' stato molto divertente poter suonare seduti, per una volta! Mi piacerebbe molto dare ai fan un'esperienza diversa come questa e metterci anche alla prova facendolo.
Non so se riusciremo mai ad organizzare un tour di questo tipo perchè ci piace troppo correre in giro e rendere le cose molto esplosive, ma potremmo provare ad incorporare qualcosa del genere nel nostro set magari.
Avete già iniziato a pensare o a lavorare sul prossimo album, e in caso sapete già in quale direzione volete andare?
ZV: Stiamo rimettendo le ruote in marcia per capire quale direzione prendere. Utilizzeremo sicuramente anche la strada in cui ci ha portato la vita dopo l'ispirazione che ci ha dato l'ultimo album.
Non ci sono ancora piani definitivi perchè ci vogliamo concentrare sui concerti di questa estate adesso e i nostri fan sono la priorità assoluta per noi.
Il prossimo anno si celebreranno 20 anni di Avenged Sevenfold, avete già in mente come festeggiare? Se tu potessi tornare ad un giorno del 1999, quale consiglio daresti alla versione giovane di te stesso di allora?
ZV: Non posso credere che sia già passato così tanto tempo. Mi piacerebbe fare qualcosa di speciale con i nostri fan, magari prenderci un po' in giro tra di noi per essere ormai diventati grandi.
Se potessi andare indietro non cambierei nulla ma mi direi "un giorno avrai un figlio che vedrà le tue foto e anche come ti vestivi... scegli meglio!"
US metal band Avenged Sevenfold on their Belfast debut and Irish roots
US rockers Avenged Sevenfold return to Ireland next week for their first ever show in Belfast. David Roy quizzed guitar man Zacky Vengeance about A7X's Irish roots, 2016's concept album The Stage and their plans for the band's imminent 20th anniversary
HI ZACKY, are you looking forward to coming back to Europe next week? Avenged Sevenfold have got lots of big festival dates lined up, including Download. Are you ready?
I'm absolutely looking forward to seeing our fans in Europe. I would be lying to say I wasn’t also looking forward to sightseeing on days off and revisiting the cultures all around the continent!
It’s a blessing to have come as far as we have. I still remember when we were playing in front of barely anyone in Europe.
You’ve been regular visitors to Ireland over the years but this is your first visit to Belfast. From listening to [2013 single] Hail To The King, it seems like you’ll probably be excited to play at the SSE Arena just around the corner from where much of Game of Thrones is filmed. Are you fans?
I am a huge fan. It has never actually crossed my mind but now that is on my list of things to see if I can! Ireland is really a beautiful place.
Do any of the band have Irish roots?
Yes, our late drummer and friend Jimmy Sullivan [AKA 'The Rev', who died in 2009] was Irish. He was very proud of that fact and even tatted a huge 'O' on his back to commemorate his family name of O'Sullivan.
Matt [M. Shadows, vocals] is also part Irish and has always been proud of that. Gates [Synyster Gates, guitar] and myself are Irish at heart and Brooks [Wackerman, drums] is 100 per cent Oaxaca Mexican, I believe.
In July you’ll be back in the States for your End of The World shows with rap/rock supergroup Prophets of Rage. Have you played with them before and are you fans of Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy and Cyprus Hill?
We have not played with them before but we are huge RATM fans. I grew up constantly in the midst of Cypress Hill and Public Enemy records to it is an absolute honor to share the stage with these musical pioneers.
It’s been two years now since you released your concept album The Stage. It was probably your most ambitious record, yet you released it with almost no promotion. Why did you decide to put it out 'under the radar' and how do you feel about the record two years on? It definitely seems like a landmark/springboard for the band in musical terms.
We needed to do something to shake up the rock world. Get people talking and not bore our fans with the traditional roll-out. It was a huge risk and was met with scepticism and criticism – but two years later we have been playing some of our biggest ever shows and proved that putting your fans first is always the best course of action.
Former Bad Religion drummer Brooks Wackerman joining just before you made that record seemed kind of like the planets aligning for you. Has he re-invigorated the band in terms of your playing and songwriting?
Absolutely, Brooks is fantastic on and off stage. He comes from legendary punk rock status with the ability to cross over to any style. That is something we founded our band off of, and being able to incorporate those styles has been really important for us.
The band did a great acoustic performance for the Grammy Museum back in 2017. Did you enjoy it and is there any chance you might do an actual tour in that ‘unplugged’ format at some point? The cover of the Stones' As Tears Go By was particularly good.
Thank-you very much. It was a lot of fun to be able to play sitting down for once! I love giving our fans different experiences and challenging ourselves while we are at it.
I don’t know if we would ever tour like that because we like to run around and blow things up too much – always down to incorporate some of that into our set though.
Have you started thinking about/working on the next album yet and, if so, what direction are things headed in?
We are definitely getting the wheels turning with regard to finding a direction and using what life has presented us since the last album as inspiration.
There are no definitive plans yet though because we want to focus on making this summer of concerts our main priority for the fans.
Next year will mark 20 years of Avenged Sevenfold, do you have any plans to celebrate? If you could go back to 1999 for a day, what advice would you give to the younger versions of yourselves?
I can’t believe how the time has passed. I would like to do something special with our fans, maybe poke some fun at ourselves for turning into old men.
If I could go back, I wouldn’t change much except offer this advice: "Some day, you will have a son who will see pictures of you wearing that.
"Choose wisely!"
