In January, sitting at the funeral for Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, one had to wonder what was next for the surviving four "brothers in arms" from Huntington Beach.

They had been about to enter the studio at the time of the tragic loss, and Jimmy himself had been working on some demos for inclusion on the new set. Would they continue? Could they go on? Perhaps most importantly, who would be sitting behind the drum kit?

Well, here we are in August, and the questions have been definitively answered. The band's new release, "Nightmare," just became the No. 1 CD in the country after bumping Eminem from the slot. And legendary drummer Mike Portnoy from the band Dream Theater dutifully picked up the sticks not just for the record, but for the current tour as well.

Portnoy, one of Jimmy's musical heroes, was honored. As he told me in a recent interview, "This was a chance for me to pay tribute to the Rev in a special way. I feel like these are my brothers now as well, and being accepted a part of the Avenged family for this project is an honor."

After listening to the CD (the band's fifth, starting with 2001's "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet") a couple of things seem clear. This band answered their loss with honest, heartfelt emotion. And Portnoy was the right man for the job. This ferocious mentor plays with an inspired fury, as if his younger compatriots are pushing him into newer realms.

Rather than a precise track-by-track review, I'd like to my offer my general comment of the CD, because it seems to consume the listener as a sum of its parts.

The opening title track sets the tone for everything that follows. An eerily melodic, black-light roller coaster ride through hell, "Nightmare" lets it be known that anyone who doubted this band would go for the throat was woefully mistaken.

The A7X trademarks are all in place. Shiny-black, Metallica-esque chords and sinewy lead guitars from Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance that curl together in ghoulish sonic vortexes. Johnny Christ's steady, white-knuckle bass patterns. And intense, passionate vocals (with the occasional beast master hell-howl) from vocalist M. Shadows.

New to the mix, though, is a desperation, perhaps borne of fury and loss, that gives the band a fresh urgency. They're growing up. Dealing with life and death. Playing for their lives, and for the life of their fallen brother.

"Welcome to the Family," "Danger Line" and "Natural Born Killer" deliver more of the almost militarily-precise metallic onslaught, the psycho frenzy that the fans adore. But as hard as they pummel you, the band is just as effective at caressing the listener. "Tonight The World Dies" is a plaintive, lighter-in-the-air, mid-tempo plea that evokes blood, sweat and tears — lots of tears.

Then there is "Fiction." It's primarily one of Sullivan's creations, and I had the chance to hear the demo of this song that the Rev had been working on just days before his death (thanks to his parents, Joe and Barbara Sullivan). Hearing how the band helped the song evolve is interesting. While still maintaining the dark, ethereal mood of the demo, they added enough paint and polish to turn it into what it deserves to be: an original five-man collaboration that is sure to force a tear from many of the band's faithful.

Barbara Sullivan offered this to me on "Nightmare": "I have yet to listen to this album without tears, but I am glad that the band was able to channel their grief into finishing Jimmy's and their last songs. This is an amazing album and I thank Matt, Brian, Zack and Johnny. I am particularly moved by 'So Far Away.' Brian's written expression of the grief over losing Jimmy, and Matt's gut-wrenching vocals, are an incredible tribute to our loss.

"I would like to take a moment to talk about the song 'Fiction.' It has saddened me to see so many questions and comments from the fans wondering if this might be a suicide note from Jimmy, and realizing they are missing the point. Remember that this was originally a 'concept' album about worst nightmares. This song, that Jimmy originally titled 'Death,' contains the hopeful thoughts of a person dying, but the effect on the listener was Jimmy's worst nightmare ... loved ones left behind suffering. It is really ironic that the guys had to record it and we have to hear it after losing Jimmy. He loved life, and was really looking forward to recording and touring again with his best friends."

The CD closes with the sprawling epic "Save Me." Shadows sings at the end, "Tonight we all die young," perhaps a fitting collective coda as the band prepares to ascend to higher levels on the creative coil.

On that note, welcome to their "Nightmare." No. 1 with a bullet (or two). Direct from Huntington Beach, a sonic tidal wave, a call to arms, a midnight scream muffled by a sweat-soaked pillow.

The collection that I think will come to define this awesome band.

The collection that no doubt will resonate with its passionate fan base, now and FoREVer.

Stavano per entrare nello studio al momento della loro tragic perdita, e Jimmy in persona ha lavorato su diversi demos da includere nel nuovo disco. Avrebbero continuato? Sarebbero riusciti ad andare avanti? E forse più importante, chi si sarebbe seduto dietro la batteria?
Ebbene, eccoci qui in Agosto, e le domande hanno trovato definitive risposte. Il nuovo album della band, “Nightmare”, ha debuttato alla No. 1 delle vendite di cd nel paese dopo aver spodestato Eminem. E il leggendario batterista Mike Portnoy dei Dream Theater si è preso il compito di prendere in mano le bacchette non solo per registrare l’album, ma anche per l’attuale tour.
Portnoy, uno degli eroi musicali di Kimmy, ne fu onorato. Come mi disse in una recente intervista, “Questa era per me l’occasione di pagare un tributo al Rev in un modo speciale. Sento che per me loro sono come fratelli ora, e essere accettato a far parte della famiglia degli Avenged per questo progetto è un onore”.
Dopo aver ascoltato il CD (che per la band è il quinto, a cominciare da “Sounding the Seventh Trumpet” del 2001), un paio di cose sono ora chiare. Questa band ha risposto alla loro perdita con emozioni sincere e provenienti dal cuore. E Portnoy era l’uomo giusto per quel lavoro. Questo feroce mentore suona con furore ispirato, come sei i suoi giovani compatrioti lo spingessero entro nuovi regni.
Più che una precisa recensione traccia-per-traccia, mi piacerebbe offrire un commento mio generale sul CD, perché sembra consumare l’ascoltatore nella somma delle sue parti.
La canzone di apertura dà il tono a tutto ciò che segue. Un inquietante melodico, oscuro giro di montagne russe attraverso l’inferno, “Nughtmare” fa sapere che chi ha dubitato di questa band, pensando che sarebbe stata inghiottita, si sono infelicemente sbagliati.
I marchi di fabbrica A7X ci sono tutti. Accordi cupi e nervosi guidano le chitarre di Synyster Gates e Zacky Vengeance che si uniscono assieme in un vortice di suoni macabri. La costanza di Johnny Christ, spaventosi patterns di basso. E l’intensa, passionale voce (con occasionali urla infernali) del vocalist M. Shadows.
Nuovo nell’insieme, comunque, è la disperazione, forse dovuta alla rabbia e alla perdita, che da alla band una nuova urgenza. Stanno crescendo. Alle prese con la vita e la morte. Suonare per le loro vite, e per la vita del loro fratello caduto.
"Welcome to the Family," "Danger Line" and "Natural Born Killer" hanno molto del preciso assalto militare metallico, la frenesia psichica che i fans adorano. Ma così come duramente di colpiscono, la band è altrettanto brava ad accarezzare l’ascoltatore. “Tonight the world dies” è un lamentoso, leggero nell’aria, motivo che evoca sangue, sudore e lacrime – molte lacrime.
E poi c’è “Fiction”. “E’ fondamentalmente una creazione di Sullivan, e io ho avuto la possibilità di ascoltare il demo di questa canzone quando il Rev ci lavorava su appena qualche giorno prima della sua morte (grazie ai suoi genitori, Joe e Barbara Sullivan). Ascoltare come ora la band ha aiutato la canzone ad evolvere è interessante. Pur rimanendo ancora nel buio, etereo umore della demo, vi hanno aggiunto abbastanza colore e raffinatura, per trasformarla in quello che meritava di essere: una collaborazione originale tra 5 uomini che è sicuro strappera qualche lacrima ai molti fedeli della band.
Barbara Sullivan mi ha ditto questo su “Nightmare”: “Ho ancora da ascoltare questo album senza piangere, ma sono felice che la band sia riuscita nel canalizzare il dolore finendo quelle che erano le ultime canzoni loro e di Jimmy. E’ un album meraviglioso e ringrazio Matt, Brian, Zack e Johnny. Sono particolarmente commossa da “So Far Away”. Le parole di Brian sono l’espressione del dolore per aver perso Jimmy, e i vocalizzi sofferenti di Matt sono un’incredibile tributo alla nostra perdita.
“Vorrei spendere un momento parlando della canzone Fiction. Mi ha molto rattristato vedere quante domande e commenti dei fans che chiedevano se si fosse potuto trattare di una nota di suicidio da parte di Jimmy, e capire che proprio non hanno colto il punto. Ricordate che questo era stato originariamente concepito come un concept album sui peggiori incubi. Questa canzone, che Jimmy originariamente aveva intitolato “Death” contiene pensieri di speranza di una persona che sta morendo, ma l’effetto che ha avuto sugli ascoltatori è stato il peggior incubo di Jimmy…le persone amate lasciate soffrire da sole. E’ davvero ironico come i ragazzi la abbiano registrata e come la abbiamo ascoltata dopo la perdita di Jimmy. Amava la vita, e desiderava molto tornare a registrare e andare ancora in tour con i suoi migliori amici”.
Il CD si conclude con la tentacolare ed epica “Save Me”. Shadows canta alla fine “Tonight we all die young”, forse una fine collettiva a cui la band si prepara per raggiungere i livelli più alti della loro spirale creativa.
Per concludere, diamo il benvenuto al loro “Nightmare”. No.1 con un proiettile (o due) Direttamente da Huntington Beach, una onda sonora di marea, una chiamata alle armi, un grido soffocato di mezzanotte da un cuscino intriso di sudore.
L’album che penso consacrerà definitivamente questa incredibile band.
L’album che senza dubbio risuonerà con la loro appassionata fan base, ora e per sempre.

Bella recensione, si vede che c'è gente che non si ferma all'apparenza ma entra più nel merito delle cose, e ne analizza tutto. Noto che è rimasto particolarmente toccato dall'unione dei ragazzi, ed è bello questo, quando c'è gente che riesce a cogliere le vere cose importanti. Thanks a lui e a chi ha tradotto.
