Dicembre è davvero agli sgoccioli e le più importanti testate giornalistiche musicali stanno tirando le somme di questo 2017 pronto a concludersi.
Metal Hammer non poteva non intervistare gli Avenged Sevenfold che hanno davvero fatto la differenza quest'anno.
Hanno posto alcune domande a Matt sugli eventi più importanti affrontati dalla band quest'anno: il The Stage World Tour, il prossimo tour da Headliner nei grandi festival europei, il decennale del Self-Titled, la partecipazione al memoriale in ricordo di Chester Bennington, le cover che hanno rilasciato a sorpresa negli scorsi mesi.
Insomma un bel po' di argomenti che hanno reso quest'anno un momento davvero incredibile.
Dal tour negli stadi degli A7X alla cruciata degli Arch Enemy per cambiare il mondo, il 2017 è stato un grande anno per il metal. Ecco il nostro riassunto delle band che hanno spaccato quest'anno.
Avenged Sevenfold: il grande colpo.
M Shadows ha portato gli Avenged in tour dentro le più grandi arene e negli stadi.
Come è andato il tour nelle grandi arene inglesi lo scorso gennaio?
- Il tour inglese è stato incredibile per me, perchè l'ultima volta che siamo stati li con eccezione del Download festival, eravamo a Wembley ed avevamo solo 3 grandi show. Questa volta ne avevamo 11 ed hanno venduto bene tutti quanti. Questo ci ha reso più sicurezza sul fatto che eravamo sulla strada giusta.
Come è stato il tour con i Metallica? Avete suonato in grandi stadi in America.
- Suonare negli stadi con 70000 persone che vanno fuori di testa ogni sera è stato incredibile e veramente ispiratorio. La sfida è stata provare a vincere la folla di persone che non ti conosce, che non vuole farsi piacere la tua musica, con te che non sai come farli scaldare e oltretutto in pieno pomeriggio con un set di solo un'ora. Fortunatamente l'abbiamo vinta con alcune persone. Immagino che li vedremo al prossimo giro.
Come hanno preso le persone le cover che avete rilasciato?
- La canzone spagnola folk, Malagueña Salerosa, è qualcosa a cui non potevano credere mentre l'ascoltavano e credo che ci rispettino per aver tentato qualcosa di così differente. Anche le radio latine l'hanno messa in rotazione!
Il fattore più incredibile nel rilasciare queste canzoni è stato il non doverle promuovere troppo, quindi è anche difficile dire quale sia stata la reale reazione. Anche se puoi trovare alcuni puristi dei Mr Bungle che si sono incazzati per la nostra cover molto personale di Retrovertigo, ci sono anche molti che neanche li avevano mai ascoltati prima e questo è davvero cool.
Come è stato esibirsi allo show tributo per Chester Bennington?
- E' stato davvero pesante, molto emozionante. Prendere parte al gruppo per due settimane e vedere i loro fan durante l'organizzazione dello show, vedere quanto Chester significasse per le persone e quanto Mike Shinoda sia importante per loro... è stato travolgente. E' stato un onore essere li ed essergli d'aiuto.
Quest'anno è stato il decimo anniversario del vostro self-titled album. Quali ricordi ti scatena questo?
- Ricordo le diverse reazioni delle persone, davvero diverse da quelle del precedente City of Evil. Ricordo anche che autoproducemmo quel disco ed è stata la prima volta che non avevamo nessuno a guardarci dietro alle spalle. Ricordo quando abbiamo fatto la parte orchestrale di A Little Piece of Heaven ed abbiamo lavorato con i ragazzi degli Oingo Boingo, c'era un sacco di creatività. Forse non è il nostro disco che suona meglio, ma avevamo un sacco di idee pazzesche ed io amo le band con idee pazzesche.
Ottenere un posto da headliner al Download è un bel colpo, ma essere richiamati a farlo un'altra volta è ancora più un colpaccio?
- Certo che si! Vuol dire che non abbiamo fatto proprio schifo! non vediamo l'ora di dare ai fans una notte sfrenata da terminare all'alba del giorno dopo.
Avete fatto impazzire tutti quanti con il set di The Stage per questo tour, possiamo aspettarci un'atmoosfera simile a Donington?
- Direi che sarà un'atmosfera simile ma sotto steroidi. Ti conviene portare più gente possibile a questo Download.
Cosa significa per te condividere lo stesso palco con Ozzy e Guns'N'Roses?
- E' surreale! I Guns mi hanno introdotto alla musica rock'n'roll quindi fare da headliner con loro in uno dei palchi più grandi al mondo mi manda fuori di testa. Ozzy ha una storia davvero profonda nel suo genere ed ogni band gli deve davvero tanto. Siamo davvero onorati di dividere il palco con queste leggende.

Avenged Sevenfold: The Big Hitters
M. Shadows took Avenged into massive arenas and stadium tours
How was it doing that huge UJK arena tour back in January?
“The UK was amazing to me, because the last time we were there, with the exception of Download, we were doing Wembley, and only getting to do three big gigs. This time we got to do 11 and they all sold really well. That gave us a lot of confidence that we were on the right track.”
What was the Metallica tour like? You played stadiums in the US
“To be in a stadium seeing 70,000 people going crazy every night was awe- inspiring. The challenge is to try and win them over – people who didn’t know you, didn’t wanna like you, with you not really being able to fire on all cylinders, out in the middle of the daylight, with a one-hour set. Hopefully we won some people over. I guess we’ll see when we next go out.”
What have people made of the cover songs you’ve been releasing?
“With the Spanish folk song, Malagueña Salerosa, people couldn’t believe what they were hearing, and I think they respected us doing something different. Spanish radio stations picked it up! The cool factor in it was to release these songs and not promote them too much, so it’s hard to say what the real reaction was. Even though you might get a bunch of Mr. Bungle purists who were pissed about us touching their song [_Retrovertigo_], you also get new people who would never have even heard them before. That’s really cool.”
How was it performing at the Chester Bennington tribute show?
“It was really heavy, really emotional. Being part of the camp for the last two weeks and seeing the fans in the build-up to the show, seeing how much Chester meant to people and how much Mike Shinoda means to people… it was overwhelming. It was an honour to be there and do a service to them.”
This year was the 10th anniversary of the self-titled Avenged album. What memories does that bring back?
“I remember the polarising reaction from people off the back of [2005’s] City Of Evil to that record. I also remember self- producing – it was the first time we never had anyone looking over our shoulder. I remember doing the strings for A Little Piece Of Heaven and working with the Oingo Boingo guys, just a lot of creativity. It’s not our best-sounding album, but there were lots of crazy ideas, and I love bands with crazy ideas.”
Getting a first shot at headlining Download is huge, but is getting asked back even more of a big deal?
“Yes! It means we didn’t totally fuck it up! We look forward to giving all the fans a wild nightcap to end day one.”
You blew everyone’s minds with The Stage set on this tour – can we expect a similar vibe at Donington?
“I would say it’s a similar vibe on steroids. You gotta bring everything you got to Download.”
What does it mean to be sharing a bill with Ozzy and Guns N’ Roses?
“It’s surreal. Guns introduced me to rock’n’roll, so to be headlining with them on the world’s biggest stage is mind-boggling. Ozzy has such a deep history in the genre and every band playing owes so much to him. We’re humbled to share a stage with these legends.”
