Quite how it’s been 10 whole years since Avenged Sevenfold unleashed City Of Evil onto an unsuspecting metal public is beyond us, but their smash-through opus remains as enthralling and ludicrous a listen as it did back in June 2005. The Orange County heavyweights’ third opus was one of the most radical departures of its time, progressing the previously metalcore-slanted upstarts at warp speed into a glammed-up, solo-heavy, hook-spewing rock’n’roll monster.
It proved the spark that would send them into the stratosphere and landed them their debut Hammer cover story, featuring this very shot showcasing the band of brothers striking a menacing pose in Atlanta, Georgia.
“It was the natural evolution of the band at the time,” recalled bassist Johnny Christ for our retrospective Avenged cover story last year. “We were ready to party and we were gonna do it in our songwriting, too!”
Needless to say, it was a move that worked wonders. In a year that saw the likes of Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine also help usher in a new generation of metal big-hitters, Avenged’s fearless approach to expanding their repertoire won them a new level of critical respect and, most importantly of course, opened their fanbase up to a new world of heavy metal excess.

Sono passati propri 10 anni da quando gli A7X hanno buttato City Of Evil ad un ignaro pubblico di metallari al di là di noi, ma la loro opera diventata un tormentone rimane un coinvolgente e assurdo ascolto come lo fu nel giugno 2005.
La terza opera dei pesi massimi di Orange County è stata una delle partenze più radicali di quei tempi, progredendo dalle precedenti inclinazioni metalcore di inizio carriera a tutta velocità con "una curvatura glam, assoli pesanti, come un mostro che vomita rock'n'roll".
Questo ha dimostrato che avevano la scintilla che li avrebbe, poi, mandati verso la stratosfera che li avrebbe fatti atterrare sulla loro prima copertina di Metal Hammer, compreso anche questo set fotografico di questa band di fratelli che provano pose minacciose ad Atlanta, Georgia.
"E' stata un'evoluzione naturale per la band, a quei tempi" ricorda il bassista Johnny Christ per la nostra retrospettica storia da cover che abbiam pubblicato l'anno passato. "Eravamo pronti a fare festa e l'abbiamo fatto anche durante la scrittura del disco".
Inutile dire che è una mossa che ha funzionato a meraviglia. In un anno che ha visto anche artisti del calibro di Trivium e Bullet for my Valentine aiutare ad inaugurare una nuova generazione di metallari, il coraggio degli Avenged nel provare ad espandere il loro repertorio gli ha portato un livello di rispetto nelle critiche, e più importante ovviamente, ciò ha aperto il loro fanbase verso un nuovo mondo di eccessi heavy metal.
In termini di successo, non si sono più guardati indietro da allora.
