Intervista di Jake Milliron
Zacky, chitarrista degli A7X, ha chiamato Metal Refuge per fare due chiacchiere sulla musica del suo gruppo, il suo apprezzamento verso i fan e sul loro tour.
Sfortunatamente stava guidando in mezzo al nulla e quindi la ricezione del telefono era pessima. Dopo aver perso la linea e ben due interruzioni di chiamata, siamo riusciti a concludere l'intervista e a capire i gusti di questo rocker.

ZV: si sono Zacky degli Avenged Sevenfold
Bene, che state combinando? Come va?
ZV: Tutto bene, e tu?
Sto alla grande, voglio ringraziarti per fare questa cosa per Metal Refuge
ZV: è un piacere amico
Ho ricevuto il vostro disco, l'ho ascoltato e devo dire che è grandioso... direi di iniziare l'intervista da qua
ZV: nessun problema
Voi ragazzi vi siete formati quando ancora andavate a scuola e avete registrato il vostro primo disco quando avevate tipo 18 anni. A che età hai iniziato a suonare la chitarra?
ZV: Um, ho iniziato a suonare quando avevo tipo 12, 13 anni, qualcosa del genere.
Eri autodidatta?
ZV: si si
Suonavi ascoltando la radio o dei dischi, qualcosa del genere quindi?
ZV: Si, suonavo ascoltando le mie band preferite. Lo trovavo davvero divertente e quindi mi veniva facile. E poi ovviamente a forza di provare inizi anche a confrontarti con le persone ed a scoprire cose nuove. Cercavo di imparare sempre cose nuove.
Hai appena menzionato le tue band preferite, quale definiresti come tue influenze? Quali ti hanno proprio influenzato maggiormente come musicista?
ZV: Cosa mi ha fatto iniziare a suonare è stata la musica dei Rancid, dei Misfits e dei Bad Religion. Ma direi che le mie band preferite in assoluto son sempre state Guns'N'Roses e Metallica, cose del genere.
Parlando di loro, cosa pensi del nuovo disco dei Metallica?
ZV: mi piace parecchio
Sei uno dei tanti!
ZV: decisamente, lo ascoltiamo un sacco. -interferenza- Alla fine che sia buono o no, continua a vendere milioni di copie.
Quanto ti ha supportato la tua famiglia nel tuo intento di crearti una carriera musicale?
ZV: Sono stati fantastici. Mi hanno sempre aiutato, ancor prima che importasse a qualcun altro. Sono sempre stati molto comprensivi e disponibili. Credo che tutte le nostre famiglie lo siano state, se non fosse stato per loro non so se saremmo riusciti ad arrivare fin qui.
Vengono anche ai vostri show?
ZV: Si, è divertente pensare che non volevo mai venissero fin quando non ho iniziato a sentirmi più sicuro che avrebbero apprezzato il concerto, perchè abbiamo suonato un po' di merda per un periodo. Mano a mano che gli show si sono fatti sempre più importanti allora ho iniziato ad invitarli sempre ed è davvero bello. Ora poi che gli show sono tutti più grandi.
Questo è davvero bello, mi stavo chiedendo adesso se voi ragazzi usate degli stagename o soprannomi?
ZV: Si
Come vi è venuta l'idea?
ZV: Beh sai, praticamente abbiamo preso delle cose che parlano delle nostre personalità. Non ci sono davvero dei significati dietro ai nomi, è qualcosa che abbiamo fatto così alla leggera. In qualche modo rappresentano la nostra personalità, è un po' una cosa oscura... ci sono rimasti addosso.
Sono anche una sorta di dis-identificazione di voi stessi?
ZV: Esatto!
Bene, passiamo al nome della band che è ispirato da una storia della Bibbia, di chi è stata l'idea di questo nome?
ZV: Credo sia stata un'idea di Shadows, lui -incomprensibile- praticamente riporta al primo omicidio della storia sul pianeta.
Nessuno di voi ha avuto da ridire in merito? Quando ve l'ha proposto avete subito pensato "si, ci rappresenta"?
ZV: Si, sai praticamente è proprio quello che è successo
Bene, adesso so che le tue radici sono punk ma hai anche parlato di metal hardcore con influenze rock. In questo disco (Waking the Fallen) avete messo insieme un bel numero di elementi diversi, pensi che la vostra musica sia cambiata da quando avete iniziato ad ora? Percepisci che i vostri fan vi accettino comunque?
ZV: Ad essere onesti non è che ce ne preoccupiamo troppo di queste cose. Il nostro sound è sicuramente diverso ora perchè siamo progrediti. Non ci interessa della percezione della gente, sia che lo apprezzino che lo odino. Fin quando continuiamo a guadagnarci nuovi fan e ad avere un buon responso per noi va tutto bene. Riguardo le persone che non sopportano il fatto che siamo cambiati... beh per ogni album che rilasciamo ci sarà sempre una parte di gente che non lo apprezzerà. Sai, per noi sono tutti benvenuti anche quelli che non ci apprezzano più perchè per ogni persona che non ci apprezza siamo abbastanza certi che ce ne saranno altri che invece lo faranno.
Dal modo in cui parli sembra che voi ragazzi apprezziate davvero molto i vostri fan...
ZV: Oh si, sono i migliori. Sono i fan più leali del mondo, siamo davvero grati a tutti loro. Pensano un sacco a quello che facciamo, alla nostra musica e non potremmo andare meglio su questo aspetto.
Davvero cool, è meraviglioso sentire band dire questo perchè la maggiorparte dei gruppo una volta che firmano un contratto assumono l'atteggiamento da rockstar.
ZV: Beh, noi siamo consapevoli che se non fosse per loro, non saremmo niente. Quindi i nostri fan rimangono la cosa più importante per noi, a parte la musica.
Nel numero di Guitar World di questo mese siete citati nella top 10 delle band metal che tutti dovrebbero ascoltare. Come ti fa sentire ricevere tutta questa notorietà da parte loro?

ZV: Si, stiamo guidando nel mezzo del nulla
Nessun problema amico, la domanda era sul numero di Guitar World in cui venite citati nella top 10 delle band metal che tutti dovrebbero ascoltare. Come ti fa sentire ricevere tutta questa notorietà da parte loro?
ZV: E' fantastico, decisamente strano. Passare dal leggere la rivista al trovarcisi sopra col resto della mia band è davvero fantastico. Penso che tutti quanti speriamo un giorno di essere in copertina.
So che molti chitarristi leggono spesso Guitar World, dalla prima all'ultima pagina. Eri una di quelle persone?
ZV: Oh si, ogni mesi speravo che pubblicassero gli spartiti di qualche canzone che mi piaceva così da poterla provare a suonare anche io, specialmente quando ancora andavo a scuola e cercavo di leggere più che potevo. Tutte le band sembrano grandi per me e adesso mi viene davvero difficile immaginare che qualcuno possa aprire quel giornale e pensare lo stesso di noi.
Deve essere stato surreale per te.
ZV: eccome!
Grazie al vostro stato di stelle nascenti nella scena metal, siete stati in grado di lasciare i vostri lavoretti per mantenervi o ancora li avete?
ZV: Sorprendentemente si. Siamo sempre stati molto impegnati e quasi sempre in tour al punto che nessuno di noi riusciva più a mantenersi un lavoro. Questo è il nostro lavoro a tempo pieno. Sai noi mangiamo, respiriamo e dormiamo questa band, non ci da il tempo di fare altro.
Avete dovuto cancellare alcuni show recentemente perchè ti sei fatto male alla mano, che ti è successo? Hai ancora problemi?
ZV: No è tutto apposto ora. Ero ubriaco e ho fatto il cretino finendo per fratturarmi le nocche, ma è passato ora.
Cosa ti piace dell'essere in giro e del vivere esperienze assurde mentre sei in tour?
ZV: Stare in tour è fantastico e molto divertente sai? Abbiamo un sacco di amici -salta il collegamento- ed è sempre bello poterli rivedere tutto, vedere come sta progredendo e quanto si stanno espandendo queste aree mano a mano che aumentano i fan. Siamo una delle poche band rimaste che cercando di divertirsi al massimo in tour.
Abbiamo sempre ragazze nel backstage, facciamo feste e ci divertiamo. Questo è il modo in cui ci divertiamo e come probabilmente faremo sempre. Sembra che un sacco di band dei nostri tempi siano così riservate... ci sarebbero un milione di storie buone da raccontare ma non è il momento di svelarle adesso. (ride)
Qual è la cosa più assurda che tu o un tuo compagno di band ha fatto sul palco?
ZV: La più assurda? Ci mettiamo un sacco di energia quando suoniamo, ci proviamo almeno. A volte capitano degli incidenti proprio per questo. Ti ritrovi cinque tipi enormi che corrono su e giu e ovviamente capita qualche incidente. Il palco è un po' un campo di battaglia a volte, ma non è la cosa peggiore.
Sono mai capitate delle liti o delle risse davvero brutali tra di voi?
ZV: no, mai, sempre cose accidentali. Anche se è difficile credere che si può essere colpiti in testa accidentalmente e perdere così tanto sangue dopo (ride) *riferimento all'incidente del warped tour dove è stato colpito dal microfono di Matt*
Sono tutte aggiunte allo show credo!
A parte la vostra città di origine, quali sono i posti in cui preferite suonare?
ZV: Al momento, a parte a casa nostra, direi a San Diego. Un po' ovunque nel sud della California insomma. Washington DC è stata molto bella, un po' ovunque anche nel nord-est sta andando sempre migliorando. Texas, Arizona... Denver, Colorado. E' incredibile, ci sono così tanti posti tra cui poter scegliere. Non è più così difficile andare in un'area e trovarsi un sacco di fan li. Avevamo tipo 10 fan che ci seguivano e sapevano dove trovarci e ora invece ce ne sono sempre di più che vengono a vederci.
Deve essere una delle sensazioni più belle del mondo per voi ragazzi, passare da una band locale ad un gruppo conosciuto a livello nazionale.
ZV: Puoi dirlo forte.
Ok adesso tornando al disco, avete questa canzone suddivisa in due parti "I won't see you tonight". Nella prima parte il soggetto sembra essere il narratore che dice addio al mondo. Nella seconda invece sembra di ascoltare il responso di quello è successo, o comunque che la canzone parli dal punto di vista delle persone che hanno perso qualcuno che si è ucciso suicidandosi. Da dove nasce l'ispirazione per questa canzone?
ZV: Oddio, non ne sono sicuro perchè non scrivo i testi. Penso che essenzialmente (salta la linea) ...sta solo raccontando una storia (salta di nuovo).
La linea del telefono si interrompe di nuovo e l'intervista si conclude così, prima che tutte le domande preparate fossero poste a Zacky.

Zacky, guitarist for Avenged Sevenfold, called the Metal Refuge for a short chat about the music his band makes, his appreciation for his fans, and touring. Unfortunately he was driving in the boonies and the cell phone reception was less than stellar. After fading out and being cut off twice, the interview was cut, but never the less we got a decent taste of what this rocker is about.

MR: Hello ?
Zacky Vengeance: Is Jake there?
MR: Yeah this is, is this Zacky?
Zacky: This is Zacky from Avenged Sevenfold.
MR: What’s going on man, how are you doing?
Zacky: Good, how are you doing?
MR: I’m alright, just to start off thanks for doing this for us at the Metal Refuge.
Zacky: No problem man.
MR: I got your cd here, I checked it out and it’s pretty bad ass, but let’s just kinda start the interview here if you don’t mind.
Zacky: Cool, no problem.
MR: Now you guys got together when you were in high school and recorded your first album when you were like 18. How young were you when you started playing guitar?
Zacky: Um, I started playing when I was in the seventh grade, so it was around 12, 13… something like that.
MR: Were you self-taught?
Zacky: Yeah, yeah.
MR: So were you playing along with the radio or cds or something like that?
Zacky: Yeah, I was playing along with my favorite bands. It was also a lot of fun back then so it was really easy. And then you know, over the course of just playing and being around people you start to try new things, I was trying to learn some new stuff.
MR: You just mentioned your favorite bands which I would take as your influences. Who influenced you the most as a musician?
Zacky: Um, what got me into it you know, was bands like Rancid, Misfits and Bad Religion. But, as far as all time favorite bands I’ve always like Guns N’ Roses and Metallica and stuff like that.
MR: Speaking of them, what do you think of the new Metallica?
Zacky: I’m into it actually.
MR: You’re one of the few!
Zacky: Yeah definitely, we get that a lot. (inaudible) Whether or not it’s good or not it still sells a million copies.
MR: Yeah, how supportive has your family been throughout your pursuit of a music career?
Zacky: They’ve been amazing. They’ve always been helping, even before anyone cared about us. They’ve always been really understanding and helping. I think everyone’s families have been, if it wasn’t for them we would never have gotten to this point.
MR: Do they go to your shows?
Zacky: Yeah, it was funny because I never really let them come to the shows until I felt confident that they’d be happy because we were playing shitty shows for so long. With the bigger shows we’ve always invited them out and it’s really cool. And now all the shows are bigger.
MR: That’s cool, now I’m just assuming this, that you guys are using stage names or nick names…
Zacky: Yeah.
MR: How did you guys come up with them?
Zacky: You know, we just kind of picked things that just kind of came out of our personalities. You know there’s really no meaning behind them, it was something we just did. They just kind of matched with our personalities and it’s kind of darker… they just kind of stuck with us.
MR: Also kind of like a dis-identification of yourselves?
Zacky: Exactly !
MR: Alright now the band name is inspired by a biblical story, who’s idea was it for the name?
Zacky: Um, that was Shadows that came up with that. He uh, (inaudible) it basically means the first murder on Earth.
MR: You guys didn’t have any disagreements about it? As soon as it was brought up it was “yeah this is what we are”?
Zacky: Yeah, you know um, that was pretty much what happened.
MR: Alright, now I’ve read your roots are in punk but you also have been described as hardcore metal with rock influences. On this record you bring together a number of elements, do you feel that your music has changed since the beginning and if so how do you perceive your fans are accepting you now?
Zacky: You know what, to be honest with you we really don’t worry about any of that shit. Our sound is definitely different now that just because we’ve progressed. We don’t care how people perceive us, whether they love it or hate it. So far we’ve been getting a lot of new fans and been getting a great response from our existing fans and that’s all we care about. For those kids that hate the fact that we’ve changed… then every album we put out there’s always going to be a handful of kids that don’t like it. You know, we welcome them not liking us anymore because for every kid that doesn’t like us we’re pretty confident that a lot more will.
MR: From the way you talk it sounds like you guys are really appreciative of your fans.
Zacky: Oh yeah, they’re the best. They’re the most loyal fans, we’re very appreciative of them. They think so much of what we do, about the music, we couldn’t do any better than them.
MR: Very cool, it’s cool to hear bands say that, because most bands once they get signed they pretty much assume the whole “rock star” persona.
Zacky: Yeah, we definitely know that if it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t be anything. So our fans are the most important thing to us. Aside from the music.
MR: In this month’s Guitar World you’re listed as one of the Top 10 Metal Bands everyone should know about, how does it make you feel receiving that notoriety from them?
(Zacky’s cell phone cuts out, and he calls back)
MR: Hello ?
Zacky: Hello.
MR: Your cell phone cut out there.
Zacky: Yeah we’re out driving in the middle of no where.
MR: That’s no problem man, but what the question was in this month’s Guitar World you’re listed as one of the Top 10 Metal Bands everyone should know about, how does it make you feel receiving that notoriety from them?
Zacky: It’s awesome, it’s definitely weird, it’s definitely weird. Coming from reading it all the time to now actually being in it with the rest of my bandmates as one of the Top 10 Metal Bands, it’s amazing. I think what we’re hoping for is to one day be on the cover.
MR: As far as Guitar World goes most of the guitarists I know read them cover to cover, were you one of those people?
Zacky: Oh yeah you know, every month I’d be hoping that they’d have a song I’d like so I could see the tablature and attempt to learn it back when I was in middle school and I’d always try to read as much as I could. All the bands, they always seemed so big to me and now it’s kind of hard to imagine that somebody could open the magazine and almost feel the same way (about us).
MR: It definitely has to be surreal for you.
Zacky: Oh it definitely is.
MR: Because of your rising status in the metal scene, have you been able to quit your days jobs, if you had them?
Zacky: Yeah, surprisingly. We were always so busy and we’re on tour so much that none of us need any day jobs. This is our full-time job. You know we eat breathe and sleep this band, it doesn’t give us any time for anything else.
MR: You recently had to cancel some shows because you injured your hand, how did you injure it and are you still having any problems with it?
Zacky: It’s fine now. Just being drunk and goofing around I ended up fracturing my knuckle, but it’s all better now.
MR: How do you like being on the road and have any majorly ridiculous things that have happened to you while being on tour?
Zacky: You know, being on tour is great, it’s a lot of fun you know? We have so many friends (inaudible) it’s cool to see everyone, to see how the progress is going and to see how all these areas are growing as far as our fans go. We’re one of the few bands that are left that have as much fun as possible on tour. We’re always having girls backstage and just partying and having fun. That’s just how we have fun and how we always will be. It seems like a lot of bands now a days, are more reserved. There is about a million good stories but we’re probably just not saying them right now.
(laughter)
MR: What’s the most outrageous thing either you or your band mates have done on stage?
Zacky: Most outrageous? We put a lot of energy into when we play live, we try to. Sometimes accidents will happen because of that. You have five full size guys running around, there’s bound to be accidents. We’ve had some split heads. It’s kind of a battle field on stage sometimes, but that’s not the most ridiculous thing.
MR: Have any real brutal, serious fights happened between you guys at all?
Zacky: No, not at all, it’s all accidents, But it’s hard to believe you can get hit in the head and how much it bleeds after it happens. (laughter) It all adds to show I guess.
MR: Aside from your hometown, what are your favorite places to play?
Zacky: Um, right now, you know besides our home, San Diego is amazing… anywhere in southern California for that matter. Washington D.C. is really good, anywhere in the north-east is getting a lot better, they’re amazing. Texas, Arizona… Denver, Colorado. It’s amazing there’s so many places that are definitely picking up, it’s not so hard to go to an area and see kids in it. We used to have like 10 kids who knew who we were and now there’s definitely kids actually coming out to see us.
MR: That definitely has to be one of the best feelings for you guys, as growing from a local band to a national act.
Zacky: Oh definitely.
MR: Ok now on the record you have the two-part song “I Won’t See You Tonight”. On the first part the subject matter kind of seems to be that the speaker is saying goodbye to the world, and on the second seems to be the response to that happening or that the song is speaking from the perspective of how people have been affected by loving someone who has committed suicide. Where did the inspiration for the song(s) come from?
Zacky: You know, I’m not sure because I don’t write any of the lyrics. I think mainly (inaudible) it’s just tellin a story (inaudible).
