After abandoning their metalcore roots, Avenged Sevenfold have been waving the banner for traditional heavy metal in the modern age. M. Shadows dropped the more abrasive aspects of his singing by the time ‘City of Evil’ arrived, magnifying his gravelly cleans as he worked in stronger vocal melodies and great hooks to complement the twin guitar attack of Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance. As a lyricist, he’s helped maintain metal’s affinity for fantasy, all with a dark bent… as it should be.
