Five Ways Avenged Sevenfold Ruled Download 2014 Review:

The Huntingdon Beach metallers, who were making their debut as headliners, brought their A Game to Download Festival on Friday night. Here’s what we loved most about their set…

1. They had looooooads of pyro…
So, they didn’t bring their massive Deathbat King along (sadface), but Buried Alive and Almost Easy were two of the hottest songs of the night, with huge fire cannons blasting through every chorus. They were so powerful they even made the rain disappear (true story). The metallers set off the loudest fireworks ever, too, closing on Unholy Confessions. Our ears are still hating them for it.

2. They played a ton of old stuff…
A7X decided to treat fans to some deeper cuts from Waking The Fallen and City Of Evil, which they missed off last time the played the UK. What songs are we talking? Well, Second Heartbeat (right into a God Save The Queen guitar solo – nice), Burn It Down (FUCK YEAH!) and even Seize The Day (DOUBLE FUCK YEAH!). It. Was. So. Awesome.

3. They paid tribute to The Rev…
It goes without saying, really, but Jimmy ‘The Rev’ Sullivan’s presence was sorely missed last night. M. Shadows actually revealed to the crowd that Jimmy’s Mum phoned him before the show to tell him to “Go and kill it – that’s what Jimmy would want”. Shadows then preceded to dedicate an emotional So Far Away to his fallen bandmate… Truly beautiful stuff.

4. Hail To The King is completely killer live…
Shepherd Of Fire… This Means War… Hail To The King… They all sound bloody HUGE live, and they bring a whole new element to Avenged’s show. Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance are two of the best guitarists in the business, so every single note, riff and solo was perfectly harmonised, and proved that the band’s initially divisive new album now holds a worthy place in A7X’s set.

5. They went down in Download history…
“Waaaaah, Avenged Sevenfold aren’t good enough to headline Download! WAAAAAH!” Some of you moaned when it was announced that the Huntingdon Beach metallers would be topping the bill this year. But M. Shadows and the gang totally owned headline status, and there’s no doubt that they’ll be headlining rock and metal festivals for years to come. SO THERE.
