Intervista di Charles Epting a Syn Gates

Durante il Master Class tenutosi ormai alcune settimane fa, Charles Epting aveva partecipato in veste di fotografo. Poco prima di andare all'incontro aveva chiesto ai fans tramite la sua pagina facebook se avevano domande da fargli porre a Gates: non sappiamo dirvi se alcune di esse alla fine sia state usate ma quell'intervista è stata finalmente pubblicata da Loudwire.

Non sono molte le domande e alcune son le stesse già postate in queste due interviste che già vi abbiamo proposto di Crave Online e Infectious Magazine ma vi forniremo una traduzione dell'intero articolo prima possibile.


Avenged Sevenfold‘s Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance just took home the award for Best Guitarists at this year’s Revolver Golden Gods Awards, but a few weeks ago Gates took the stage for a much different kind of gathering. In an event co-sponsored by Schecter Guitar Research and Guitar Center, Gates hand-selected 10 guitarists from an online contest to take part in an hour-and-a-half master class.

The lucky winners — all obviously huge Avenged fans — were in awe as Gates took the stage and played an original composition written specifically for the class. The rest of the curriculum involved tips on various techniques, ranging from picking styles to songwriting. And the end of the class, Syn asked the group if it would be alright if he brought out his acoustic guitar to play one of his favorite songs: Django Reinhardt’s ‘Minor Swing,’ a gypsy jazz standard.

Following the exclusive class, which was filmed and will be featured on Guitar Center’s YouTube page, Loudwire caught up with Gates to talk about his own guitar heroes, A7X’s songwriting process and the upcoming Rockstar Mayhem Tour with Korn. Check out our chat with Synyster Gates below:

If you could have taken a master class with any guitar player when you were growing up, who would it have been?

When I was young, probably Dimebag Darrell. That was my guy. I respected Steve Vai’s playing technique a little bit more, but just to be able to meet Dimebag would have been phenomenal. He could have shown me so much cool stuff. That’s the guy.

You and Zacky have such a distinctive twin-guitar sound. When the band was starting out, were there any indications that you guys would drive the band’s sound?

I don’t know if that kind of perspective was there, but definitely it was a guitar-driven band. When Matt [M. Shadows] writes songs, he’s writing on guitar. When Jimmy ['The Rev' Sullivan] was alive, he was writing for Avenged on guitar, mainly. I mean, we borrowed some elements from our old band Pinkly Smooth, songs like ‘Fiction’ or ‘A Little Piece of Heaven’ are very much him on the piano doing his thing.

Can you talk more about the band’s songwriting process?

Well, songs like ‘Brompton Cocktail’ or ‘Afterlife,’ those are very much Jimmy sitting down with a guitar. Everybody comes from that punk-rock background, everybody has a guitar. So it made sense, I knew it was going to be guitar-oriented. And when we started writing, we all liked the dueling guitars. Everything had to be harmonized. You listen to ‘City of Evil’ and it’s just layers and layers of harmonies. We were really influenced by bands like Queen and Mr. Bungle and all of their harmonies, and that really comes through in the music.

What does it feel like to by headlining the Mayhem Festival this summer alongside a legendary band like Korn?

This tour is going to be really exciting. I love all the bands. Korn are great friends of ours, so to be on tour with friends is amazing. We’ve been very fortunate to meet a lot of great bands, successful bands, that we can actually go tour with. Because the bottom line for those on the other side of it is they have to sell tickets. So its fortunate when you have great friends that can sell tickets as well because then you get to hang out with them everyday. I grew up listening to Korn, they were one of my favorite bands, just for the bass playing, vocals, and their extremely innovative guitar and drums.

Can you talk a bit about what fans can expect at your Mayhem show?

We’re probably going to play different songs, and just switch it up. We definitely have other things we can’t divulge, but we’re definitely going to put on a bigger and better show. Hopefully a little bit longer than usual, too.

Syn Gates e Zacky Vengeance degli A7X si sono appena portati a casa il premio come migliori chitarristi ai Revolver Golden Gods Awards di quest'anno, qualche settimana fa però, Gates era su un altro palco a fare qualcosa di differente.. In un evento sponsorizzato dalla Schecter Guitars Research e da Guitar Center, Gates ha scelto personalmente 10 chitarristi da un contest online per far si che prendessero parte ad un master class di un'ora e mezza.

I fortunati vincitori, tutti chiaramente grandi fan degli A7X, erano in soggezione mentre Gates si prendeva il palco e suonava una composizione inedita scritta appositamente per la classe. Il resto del curriculum comprendeva trucchetti su varie tecniche, dal ranging al picking, fino alla composizione. Alla fine delle lezioni, Syn ha chiesto al gruppo se per loro andava bene che tirasse fuori la sua chitarra acustica per suonare una delle sue canzoni preferite: Minor Swing di Django Reinhardt, un gypsy-jazz classico.

Seguendo l'esclusiva lezione, che è stata filmata e sarà poi sull'account youtube di Guitar Center, Loudwire ha avuto modo di far due chiacchere con Gates per parlare dei suoi personali miti alla chitarra, del processo di scrittura dei Sevenfold e del prossimo Rockstar Mayhem tour con i Korn che la band inizierà a breve. Ecco quindi la nostra chiaccherata con Gates:



Se avessi potuto fare un Master Class con un qualsiasi chitarrista, quando stavi crescendo, chi sarebbe stato?

Oh man! Quando ero giovane, probabilmente Dimebag Darrell. Quello era il mio ragazzo. Rispetto un pochino di più la tecnica nel suonare di Steve Vai, ma anche solo riuscire a incontrare Dimebag sarebbe stato fenomenale. Mi avrebbe potuto far vedere un sacco di cose fighe. E' lui il ragazzo.


Tu e Zacky avete un suono molto distintivo di chitarra doppia. Quando la band ha iniziato, c'erano già indicazioni che voi ragazzi avreste indirizzato il sound della band?

Non so se quel tipo di prosepettiva già ci fosse ai tempi, ma sicuramente, era una band guidata dalle chitarre. Quando Matt scrive una canzone lo fa con la chitarra. Quando Jimmy era vivo e scriveva per noi lo faceva con la chitarra, per lo più.
Voglio dire, prendevamo in prestito alcune cose della nostra vecchia band -i Pinkly Smooth- canzoni come Fiction o A Little Piece Of Heaven che sono una cosa di Jimmy al piano che fa un po' quel che vuole.


Puoi dirci di più della fase di composizione della band?
Beh, canzoni come Brompton Cocktail o Afterlife, quelle son canzoni scritte da Jimmy seduto con la chitarra in mano. Tutti quanti vengono da un background punk-rock, tutti hanno una chitarra. Quindi ha senso, lo sapevo che sarebbe andato a finire orientato dalle chitarre. E quando abbiamo iniziato a comporre, piaceva a tutti l'idea delle due chitarre "duellanti". Tutto doveva essere armonizzato.
Se ascolti City Of Evil è tutto livelli su livelli di armonie. Eravamo molto influenzati da band come Queen o Mr Bungle e tutte le loro armonie, e questo è quello che viene dalla musica.


Come ti senti di essere l'headliner al Mayhem Festival per tutta la prossima estate, al fianco di una band leggendaria come i Korn?

Penso che sarà davvero emozionante, io amo tutte le band e i Korn sono nostri grandi amici. Essere in tour con gli amici è di solito il nostro obiettivo. Siamo molto fortunati ad aver incontrato un sacco di band grandi e di successo con cui possiamo andare in tour insieme. Perchè alla fine, l'obiettivo è di vendere tanti biglietti. Quindi siamo fortunati quando si hanno grandi amici che possono vendere tanti biglietti a loro volta, perché alla fine dobbiamo uscire con loro ogni giorno. Sono cresciuto ascoltando Korn, erano uno dei miei gruppi preferiti, già solo per il modo di suonare il basso, voce ed i loro estremamente innovativi chitarra e batteria.


Puoi dire ai tuoi fans cosa possono aspettarsi dal vostro show al Mayhem?

Probabilmente suoneremo canzoni differenti e le cambieremo a turno. Avremo anche senz'altro altre cose che non posso già divulgare, ma cercheremo di metter su uno show più grande e migliore. Fortunatamente un pochino più lungo del normale, anche.
