A loud and aggressive 'Welcome'
Avenged Sevenfold plays Mosaic Place
For a few hours on Wednesday, the crowd at Mosaic Place was invited to join the Avenged Sevenfold family.
The American rock act rolled in to Moose Jaw alongside openers Adrenaline Mob and Hellyeah, and for anyone who paid the price of admission, this triple bill likely did not disappoint: a fair share of screaming, more than one power solo, and a healthy dose of pyrotechnics — which this reviewer is fairly certain was a Mosaic Place first — during the main act are just a small sample of the many stops pulled out to impress a crowd that leaned toward the younger side.
Adrenaline Mob proved competent openers, drawing on the experience of former members of Static X and Disturbed and whipping through a fast and heavy set of five songs while working the crowd — and the photographers — with poses and power-shredding.
Heavy metal supergroup Hellyeah — consisting of former members of Mudvayne, Nothingface, Pantera and Bloodsimple — followed up and somehow managed to take the show to an almost deafening volume, offering up a set that included a track from their upcoming album Blood for Blood and some of their better-known songs, including You Wouldn't Know.
But the main attraction was Avenged Sevenfold, as was made evident when the band's set was revealed while AC/DC's Back In Black poured out of the arena's sound system.
The band itself opened with Shepherd of Fire segueing into Critical Acclaim. The second song was accompanied by a healthy array of pyrotechnics, drawing excited roars from an audience that by that point had started crowd-surfing over the barricade in a bid to get closer to the band.
A brief interlude followed, with M. Shadows working the crowd by asking how many in the audience had seen Avenged Sevenfold — drawing a wave of cheers and screams from the audience. A second, much louder wave was drawn out when Shadows asked the audience who had never been to a show.
He then welcomed the entirety of the crowd to Avenged Sevenfold's "f---ed up family" as the band launched into Welcome to the Family.
The set was rounded out with the band's catalogue of blistering hits, from Hail to the King to Bat Country.
Avenged Sevenfold and their openers aren't bands for everybody — least of all for people who value their hearing — but for those who came to see a metal show, they must have been a blast.
The roar of the Mosaic Place crowd is probably the best testament to that.
