Deathbat begins: Metal band Avenged Sevenfold will bring its "Deathbat" logo to life as a headliner at this year's Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival. "We have a 17-by-40-foot 'Deathbat' that we're going to be playing inside of," says singer M. Shadows (born Matt Sanders), 30. "Everything catches on fire; everything shoots flames. All sorts of cool stuff for the kiddies." The Uproar Festival, which kicks off tonight in Camden, N.J., continues through Oct. 14 with a lineup that includes Three Days Grace, Seether, Bullet for My Valentine, Escape the Fate, Sevendust, Black Tide, Art of Dying and Hell Or Highwater.
The fans have spoken: Having toured behind 2010's Nightmare album for 13 months, A7X attempted to stave off set-list fatigue by asking fans to vote for the songs the band should play during Uproar. Radio hits Nightmare, Bat Country, Afterlife and A Little Piece of Heaven received the most votes, but Shadows says the results produced a few surprises: "There's a song called M.I.A. on City of Evil that's kind of a surprise. We had to learn that. It's like 10 minutes long. I Won't See You Tonight, Pt. 1 is a nine-minute song. So there's some cool stuff." Not Ready to Die, a song the band recorded for the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops, also made the list.
RIP, Rev.: After the December 2009 death of drummer James "The Rev." Sullivan from a toxic combination of prescription drugs and alcohol, fans began bringing homemade memorial signs and shirts to A7X shows. Some even gave the band memorial books. "One, in particular, was like 400 pages," Shadows says. "There were all these pictures of people with Jimmy and stories of how he had inspired them and how much they missed him." For the current tour, drummer Arin Ilejay joins Shadows and the other band members — lead guitarist Synyster Gates , rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance and bassist Johnny Christ . "He's a great drummer, a great guy," Shadows says of Ilejay. "Our thing now is we're just waiting to see how the writing process goes with him when we decide to make another record, before we make it official that he's in the band."
Where it all began: A local punk show at the Huntington Beach Library gave Shadows his first taste of the spotlight, with pre-A7X band Successful Failure. "I had my The Exploited flight jacket on, and my spiky hair," he says. "And a bunch of friends there, and no one else." At some stops on Avenged Sevenfold's first regional tour, Shadows didn't even have that many people. "In Arizona, seven people showed up; we sold one EP. We played three dates in Texas, and there were a total of 23 people at all three shows."
Darn cows: Headlining arenas, though, can be difficult. In May, the group played a Texas venue the night after a rodeo. And Shadows is allergic to fur. "I felt terrible all day; I couldn't figure out why my throat was closing up." His allergic reaction led the band to shorten that night's set and cancel its following show in Dallas. "I said, 'If we play tonight, I'm going to blow my voice out. This is not worth canceling two dates; let's cancel one and make it up.'"
Warming up: Before each concert, Shadows goes through a lengthy ritual involving Nightmare. "It's the first song of the set, but I don't want it to sound like it's the first song of the set," he says. "Three hours before the set, I'll do a 30-minute warm-up. Then I rest for 30 minutes, then I'll do a couple other things. Twenty minutes before, I'll sing through Nightmare twice. Then we get pumped up, put the in-ears on, go out there and play some music."
