Con l' avvicinarsi del 2020 Guitar World ha deciso di postare la classifica dei 20 migliori album della decade secondo i propri lettori. Naturalmente essendo una testata specializzata, le parti di chitarra devono essere ricercate e ricche dal punto di vista tecnico e compositivo all'interno dell' album.
In dodicesima posizione troviamo The Stage degli Avenged Sevenfold:

The Stage caught most unawares. It dropped without fanfare, three years after Hail to the King, and saw drummer Brooks Wackerman make his debut for the Huntington Beach quintet. For a band who made their bones at the apex of the mid-noughties mainstream metal scene, they truly shoot for the moon with an album of vast ambition and scope.

Here, the demarcation between Synyster Gates as lead guitarist and Zacky Vengeance on rhythm is blurred; each dovetails the other for a record that is riven with bold harmonies, and pursues big ideas with aggression.

The Stage ha colto molto di sorpresa. E' stato rilasciato senza clamore, tre anni dopo Hail to the King, e ha visto il batterista Brooks Wackerman fare il suo debutto nel quintetto di Huntington Beach. Per una band che si è fatta le ossa all' apice del mainstream della scena metal a metà degli anni duemila, fu per loro un vero sparo alla luna un album di così vasta ambizione e portata. Qui la demarcazione tra Synyster Gates come chitarrista solista e Zacky Vengeance alle ritmiche è sfocata; ognuno coincide con l' altro per un disco pieno di armonie audaci, che ricercano grandi idee con aggressività.

Guitar World ha recentemente proposto un articolo molto interessante in cui si parla dei 100 migliori chitarristi di tutti i tempi.
Per suddividere in maniera più appropriata i diversi artisti, la redazione ha creato diverse classifiche in base al genere suonato. Nella categoria "Best Metal Guitarist" al posto numero nove trova spazio il nostro Brian definito "Il mago delle scale degli Avenged Sevenfold"

“My dad always said you can create your own weather. You can create your own root notes and superimpose more progressions over them to get this major/minor tonality with layers of key changes. I love John Williams, Mr Bungle, Danny Elfman, Igor Stravinsky, Maurice Ravel, classical cats and then jazz guys like Allan Holdsworth. Obviously you can’t always be crazy, but it’s about tension and resolution.




“When you decipher what’s happening, there’s whole tone and augmented shit all over the place. I got into a lot of that stuff on the records. You need to have some theory and understand what the fuck you’re doing. Invent your own scales if you want. If it’s something you’ve never heard before, all the better. It will always lead to something.”

Traduzione: "Mio padre ha sempre detto che puoi creare il tuo tempo. Puoi creare le tue note principali e sovrapporre più progressioni su di esse per ottenere questa tonalità maggiore/minore con strati di modifiche chiave. Amo John Williams, Mr Bungle, Danny Elfman, Igor Stravinsky, Maurice Ravel, i classical cats (inteso come gli artisti principali della musica classica) e i ragazzi del jazz come Allan Holdsworth. Ovviamente non puoi essere sempre pazzo, ma si tratta di tensione e risoluzione.
"Quando decifri cosa sta succedendo, c'è un' intera tonalità e la "roba" aumenta dappertutto. Mi sono occupato di molte cose nei dischi. Devi avere un pò di teoria e capire cosa diamine stai facendo. Inventa la tua scala se lo vuoi. Se è qualcosa che non hai mai sentito prima, tanto meglio. Ti condurrà sempre a qualcosa".
